Ci tuffiamo in una PP all’insegna dell’archeologia industriale cittadina, guidati dalla solita curiosità spicciola e dai ricordi dei racconti di mia nonna, ai quali mi pento ogni giorno di più di non aver dato infinita importanza e maniacale attenzione. Lei una vita all’Aeronautica (“ho ricevuto la notizia via radio fra i primi, nessuno voleva crederci”), sua sorella una vita alla Manifattura Tabacchi.
Iniziamo con un giro lungo il perimetro esterno: partendo da corso Regio Parco, ci intrufoliamo in qualche cortiletto e notiamo segni di vita stanziale umana e felina, con la presenza di qualche orticello dove il mio compagno di merende nota aneto e erba cipollina. Niente maria, ma ci starebbe bene.
Dietro la fabbrica scopriamo il vivaio comunale con vista Superga, molto curato ma per fortuna anche molto chiuso, che ho visto gli occhi del Condor illuminarsi e io proprio non subisco il fascino dei vegetali.
Ci dirigiamo verso l’ingresso della fabbrica e, con nostra grande sorpresa, troviamo il portone aperto: qualcuno ci sta lavorando e non fa proprio caso a noi due.
Nel cortile salta subito all’occhio un monumento sobrio e significativo in ricordo degli operai morti in guerra , da qui si dipanano i binari seguendo i quali passeggiamo curiosando fra gli interni sbirciabili.
Alcuni particolari non possono proprio non attirare l’attenzione.
Mentre ficco il naso qua e là penso alle dita sottili che creavano sigarette, sigari e quant’altro, a quella incredibile pazienza e attenzione ai dettagli che da sempre appartiene alle donne. Non vorrei passare per maschilistasciovinistaeccetera , ma mi viene da chiedermi se siamo più felici ora: incazzate manager e vestite D&G.
Vabbè, lo so lo so le condizioni di lavoro lo sfruttamento e tutto il resto ma è un pensiero estemporaneo.
Girovagando per la rete trovo questo aneddoto trionfale: nel 1945, le tabacchine furono protagoniste di un episodio glorioso, allorchè tagliarono i copertoni dei camion respingendo così le Brigate Nere fasciste. I fascisti avevano occupato la fabbrica per rappresaglia contro una colletta che era stata raccolta a favore dei partigiani.
Grandi grandi grandi tabacchine, mi sa che se facessero ancora le sigarette loro non avrei mai smesso di fumare.
E ora il solito cenno storico palloso, ma si apprezzi che lo metto sempre alla fine:
Dopo la grande paura del 1706, culminata con il lungo assedio delle truppe francesi a Torino, ed il conseguente rischio di veder cancellato dalle carte geografiche lo stato Sabaudo, il sovrano Vittorio Amedeo II procedette al riassetto urbanistico della Capitale ed al rafforzamento delle strutture statali. Nell’ambito di questo programma si inserisce la volontà di riunire in un unico luogo, facilmente controllabile, la lavorazione e la produzione di alcuni generi di monopolio. In un primo tempo si optò per altri luoghi, ma in conseguenza al crescente aumento del consumo di tabacco Carlo Emanuele III nel 1758 assegnò all’architetto Benedetto Ferrogio la progettazione di un nuovo complesso industriale, con annesse piantagioni e semenzaio. Il progetto della Regia Fabbrica del Tabacco si ispirava alle imponenti manifatture reali francesi. Il sito prescelto dal re era quello occupato in precedenza dall’antica residenza di caccia del Viboccone che in quel periodo era in stato di abbandono per i danni subiti nel 1706. I lavori presero avvio alla fine del 1758 e al principio del ’59 si iniziarono a costruire gli edifici per accogliere la fabbrica delle macine, i laboratori, i magazzini ed anche lo scavo del canale derivante dalla Dora, attualmente chiamato Canale del Regio Parco. L’edificio, ultimato nel 1789, era costituito da fabbricati a lunghe maniche adibiti ad alloggi e laboratori con ampi cortili utilizzati per lo smaltimento dei carri carichi di tabacco. Nel perimetro della fabbrica era situata anche una cartiera che produceva carte valori, usando una stupenda macchina all’inglese nella quale "(…) i cenci, introdotti grezzi da un lato, escono dall’altro lato come carta perfettamente asciugata e liscia" (Bertolotti 1840). Ancora qualche anno dopo era ancora l’unica cartiera di Torino e godeva del privilegio governativo della fabbricazione di carte da gioco, da bollo e filigranata. Verso il 1840 attorno alla fabbrica sorse il borgo; in quel periodo la Manifattura Tabacchi, con 600 operai, era il più grande opificio torinese e, dopo l’unità d’Italia, il secondo per importanza. Nel 1875 contava circa 2.500 tra operai ed impiegati. Tra le operaie dominava la mansione della Sigaraia: figura professionale tipica delle Manifatture fino a quando il sigaro fu uno dei prodotti di maggior consumo. All’inizio del novecento la manifattura era una sorta di comunità; all’interno c’erano l’asilo nido, detto incunabolo, la stazione della Guardia di Finanza, officine, mense, alloggi per i dipendenti, il dopolavoro con teatro, sale giochi e bar. A queste strutture se ne aggiunsero altre: la Scuola materna Umberto I, la Scuola elementare C. Abba e la chiesa San Gaetano da Thiene.
Negli anni sessanta venne dismesso il reparto per il trinciato da pipa, il sigaro e il toscanello, e si mantenne solo il reparto sigarette; scomparve così la figura della sigaraia. La storia della Manifattura Tabacchi di Torino si concluse nel 1996 quando il Monopolio decise la chiusura dello stabilimento, trasferendo gli ultimi 25 addetti.
Curiosità: Tabacchine e Sigaraie. nella metà del XIX secolo la Regia Manifattura del Tabacco produceva vari tipi di sigari e tabacco da fiuto. Come è già stato detto crebbe progressivamente, fino a divenire la più grande fabbrica cittadina, raggiungendo nel 1875, l’organico di 2.528 dipendenti. Si trattava in grandissima maggioranza di donne, denominate genericamente Tabacchine, che avevano nell’operaia addetta alla produzione dei sigari, la Sigaraia, la figura professionale più rappresentativa. Era infatti la Sigaraia colei che produceva completamente a mano il prodotto principale, il sigaro Toscano. All’inizio del XX secolo l’importanza del sigaro era destinata lentamente, ma progressivamente a diminuire, sostituito dalla sigaretta, o come si diceva allora Spagnoletta.
